GERMAN ORIGINS 1500 - 1860

The origins of our Biehle Family in Cincinnnati can be traced primarily to Southwestern Germany beginning in the late Seventeenth Century. The Biehles came from Riegel-am-Kaiserstuhl in Baden, while the Volz Family came from Gamshurst in Baden. The Spreters were prominent in Rottweil, Wuerrtemberg fo over four hundred years. Others likely came from Hannover or Saxony in Central Germany.

EMIGRATION TO AMERICA 1840 - 1870

Our Biehle Family ancestors emigrated to America from Baden and Wuerttemberg in Southwestern Germany in the middle of the Nineteenth Century as part of the Great German Migration to the New World. The first to arrive were Cosmas and Emilia (Amelia) Volz and their family in 1841, followed by Franz George Biehle and Josephine Jung (Young) in 1847. Christian Heveker arrived about the same time from possibly Hannover or Saxony. Johann Spreter and his future wife, Maria Wenger both came to America in 1854 from Rottweil. All of these ultimately settled in Cincinnati. Other members of the extended Biehle family continued to emigrate to the New World throughout the 1850's.

THE BIEHLES IN AMERICA

Franz George Biehle initially settled in Southeastern Indiana and subsequently moved with his wife, Amelia Volz, to Cincinnati, where they would be joined by Josephine Jung, Johann Spreter and Maria Wenger, Christian Heveker and others.

In addition to our direct immigrant ancestor, Franz George Biehle, three of his siblings, Joseph, Carl (Charles) and Franzisca Biehle. all emigrated to America from Riegel in the mid-1850's. Initially they settled in Boonville, Missouri. Charles subsequently moved to St. Louis where he was a policeman for many years. Joseph died shortly after arriving in America. His widow, Katherina Hildebrand Biehle, and three of his children, along with Franzisca Biehle and her husband, Louis Jerger, settled in Belleville and Smithton, Illinois, a few miles from St. Louis.
